Windows is justified for software that requires the Windows API, a GUI-only vendor tool, .NET Framework dependencies, or a workflow built around Remote Desktop. A Python bot, Node service, Docker stack, or static site normally belongs on the cheapest Linux VPS, where the same budget buys more usable capacity.
Secure the Windows VPS first
Use a unique administrator password, install updates, restrict Remote Desktop at the firewall, create a non-admin account for routine work, and configure backups before data enters the machine. Do not expose extra ports because a tutorial screenshot did.
If this is your first server, the VPS setup guide uses Ubuntu and SSH because that path is cheaper and easier to automate. Choose Windows only when the workload names a Windows dependency you can point to.
